I made this outstanding meal this weekend. It was a vegetable curry with spiced rice. Then I made some peanut noodles, which when she was leaving to pick up the soy sauce, Stacey called "stupid noodles" because she felt we were already having enough for dinner. However, the stupid noodles were the highlight of the meal and everyone had seconds. Most of the time, I love trying new meals in the kitchen.
However, when it comes to a holiday meal, there really is no need for innovation. I scoff as I look at featured holiday meals in magazines. Change our turkey? Change our side dishes? Nonsense. When I go back to my parent's house at Christmas, I want her meal to taste the way it has tasted for as long as I can remember. Since I've been living so far away that I can't come home for Thanksgiving, I have worked hard to make my meal taste like my Mom's. It has taken years to perfect the homemade rolls but finally I did and now everyone is happy. This year, I'm even going to try the giblet gravy.
Gravy has been my weak area in the holiday meal I must admit. It seemed a small price to pay to not have to mess with giblets. One of the kids asked me to try since the gravy thing just hasn't been working out. So, I've already talked to my Mom and gotten the insider scoop on how to cook and use the little yucky things I usually throw away.
